Bromstone Primary School
Black History 2024
Last week we celebrated Black history throughout school. This year, the focus for Black History Week across the country was “Reclaiming Narratives.” During the week, children were encouraged to explore black history and culture. This sits really well with our overarching question. “Why do rights exist?” We always like to start the term with a “Wow Day”. In previous years when exploring rights, we have taken away the right for children to play and speak. This year we decided to take away the children’s right to sit. An announcement was made on Monday morning and then all the blue chairs were stacked in the corner and wrapped in “Do Not Enter” tape. Some passionate demonstrations then followed, as children protested and earnt back their right to sit.
For the rest of the week, children explored a year group theme linked to black history. EYFS enjoyed listening to the story of SULWE. A powerful, moving picture book about colourism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within. Year 1 explored the life of Mary Seacole, Year 2 looked at black champions and sporting heroes. Year 4 had fun exploring the life of Martin Luther King Jr and the importance of his “I have a Dream.” speech. Year 5 linked their research to remembrance and explored the life of Walter Tull, a World War 1 soldier. Year 6 discussed the impact of the Windrush and the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
It was a very thought-provoking week when the children had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of human rights and equal opportunities. Finally, the week ended with the year 3 children entertaining everyone with a calypso song and dance as they presented their own interpretation of the Notting Hill carnival. Fun was had by all.
