Term 2- Whose rights are important?

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope all the children have had a wonderful rest and are now ready to engage in the exciting learning of term 2.
This term we are going to be exploring the question ‘Whose rights are important?' as part of our whole school concept question 'Why do rights exist?'.
Black History Month
As it is Black History Month, we are going to be starting the term learning all about influential leaders or people. We will be focusing on learning about Martin Luther King Jr and Marcus Rashford and looking at the impact they both made as political influencers. We will also be looking at what challenges they may have had to overcome to support civil rights for the Black community.
English
In English, we will be looking at both poetry and diary writing. The poem will be ‘Still I Rise’, which is a very moving and thought-provoking poem, which links well to our overarching question relating to rights. During our reading sessions we will be Robert Louis Stevenson's poem" From a Railway Carriage" and " So You Think You've Got it Bad", a text linked to our look at the Romans.
Maths
For Maths this term, we are going to continue to focus on addition and subtraction, area, multiplication and division. Towards the end of the term, length and perimeter.
Continue with timetables, practise at home, at least 3 times a week if possible.
Science
Our science theme is electricity this term. The children will construct a simple circuit, identify/ name parts of a circuit. They will also recognise common conductors and insulators. Children will know how they can break a circuit. We plan to make some exciting games and decorations as we approach Christmas that allow the children to apply their scientific knowledge.
The Big Question
Our main area of learning this term is the Romans, where we look at the History of the Romans and the rights of both the Roman Soldiers and Slaves. We will be looking at chronology, the Roman Empire and how the Romans invaded Britain. We will finally look at how the Celts tried to resist this invasion. Our whole school concept is RIGHTS, so we will also be exploring the rights of the Celts, Romans and their slaves.
