Term 6: How does disease change the world?

Welcome back. As we enter the final term of the year we are looking forward to exploring our class question linked to the concept of adaptation and change. As a school we are going to be exploring the question" Is it better to adapt or stay the same?"

In year 5 we will be looking in depth at the effect the plague had on England and its impact on history. The children will have an opportunity to develop their own questions connected to this. We will learn about the origin of the plague and the reasons it spread so fast. We will also be learning about how the symptoms were treated and the superstitions of mediaeval medicine.

In English we will start the term by writing in role as pestilence, and then we will be developing our writing skills with the opportunity to write a historical story. We will continue to develop our reading skills through comprehension exercises with a focus on written responses.

In Maths we will explore shape, direction, decimals and the conversion of units of measurement. We will continue to revise our times tables and develop strategies to face more complex word problems as well as maintaining the four number operations.

In science, we will be developing our investigation skills and developing our scientific enquiry. The children will have an opportunity to investigate the life cycle of a flea, learn about bacteria and Alexander Fleming, whilst also observing the effects of yeast.

In art, we will be looking at Lowry and responding to his artwork. We will then go on to develop our own sketches of figures and use perspective in the style of Lowry. In PSHE we will be looking at how we can cope with change and how change can at times be a positive thing. This will be helpful as the children prepare for the challenges and excitement of year 6.

This term is our forest school slot. Hastings will be going out on a Monday afternoon and Bodiam will continue on a Thursday.  As the children will be outside most of the afternoon please be mindful in regard to clothing and sunscreen protection.
