Year one will be hoping to investigate 'what makes a hero?'
We will explore this question through every lesson in our curriculum, understanding how each discipline can help us develop our knowledge and skills.
We will be looking at Local Heroes
English
This term in English, Year 1 children will be exploring the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Through this story, they will develop their understanding of storytelling elements, such as characters, settings, and key events. The children will engage in various activities, including sequencing the story, discussing the moral lessons it teaches, and using descriptive language to enhance their writing. This familiar and engaging tale will provide a rich foundation for developing early literacy skills, creativity, and a love for stories. Also, they will be writing fact files about local heroes, focusing on the important work of the Coastguard, to learn more about their role in keeping our community safe.
Maths
This term in Maths, Year 1 children will be focusing on developing their understanding of Place Value, as well as exploring Addition and Subtraction. They will learn to recognise, count, and compare numbers, building a strong foundation for working with larger numbers. Through practical activities and problem-solving tasks, they will practice adding and subtracting numbers within 20, using different strategies to build fluency and confidence. These essential skills will help the children deepen their understanding of number relationships and prepare them for more complex mathematical concepts.
Curriculum
This term, Year 1 children will be learning about Local Heroes in Thanet as part of their History curriculum. They will discover the contributions of inspiring individuals and groups, such as the Coastguard, who have played a vital role in keeping our community safe. Through stories, discussions, and creative activities, the children will explore how these heroes have impacted our local area and what it means to be a hero in everyday life. This topic aims to deepen their understanding of the past and their appreciation for the people who make a difference in their community.
In Science, the focus will be on Animals Including Humans, where children will learn about the characteristics, needs, and habitats of different animals, including humans. Also, they will be looking at labelling body parts, their functions and how to stay healthy.
In PSHE, the children will explore Citizenship, discussing topics like being part of a community, showing kindness, and making positive choices.
In ICT, they will develop their programming and problem-solving skills by learning to follow and give clear directions, both on-screen and in practical activities. These exciting topics will provide opportunities for cross-curricular learning, fostering curiosity and critical thinking
This term in Music, Year 1 children will be exploring a variety of musical skills, including rhythm, chants, and keeping a steady beat. They will enjoy singing songs together, learning to use their voices expressively and confidently. The children will also have the opportunity to compose simple melodies, experimenting with different sounds and patterns to create their own music. These activities are designed to develop their listening, coordination, and creativity while fostering a love for music.
